Technical Education Key to Lesotho’s Youth Employment, Says Labour Ministry

The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Moshe Mosaase, urged a shift in how technical schools are perceived, emphasizing that technical skills are among the most marketable in today’s job market. He made the remarks during the graduation ceremony at Ntlafatso Skills Training Centre (NSTC).

Mosaase highlighted that in many overseas countries, technical school graduates often secure the highest paying jobs. He pledged the government’s continued support for NSTC, recognizing the centre’s strategic role in developing skills relevant to Lesotho’s labour market.

The Principal Secretary stressed that youth should not pursue higher education only to face unemployment. He noted that education should equip young people with practical skills to succeed, whether they seek employment or start their own businesses. He encouraged graduates to consider entrepreneurship and to hire others, citing examples of NSTC alumni who have improved their lives significantly, including the district’s top plumber who trained at the centre.

NSTC Director Mr. Poelo Maanela acknowledged the achievements of the 82 graduates, noting that this year’s cohort includes learners from all districts, reflecting the centre’s growing reach. He urged graduates to adhere strictly to the skills and specifications taught by instructors and avoid shortcuts in their work. Maanela added that, with support from the Technical and Vocational Department, processes to ensure NSTC’s certificates gain official accreditation are ongoing.

On behalf of parents, Mrs. Makhotso Rakoaeana acknowledged the sacrifices made by families to support their children’s education. Graduate representative Moreki Ts’eane promised that the cohort would work hard to honor their parents’ efforts.

NSTC was established in 1990 with technical and financial support of 3.5 million from the South African government through the Ministry of Home Affairs. The centre was handed over to the Government of Lesotho in 1992 and has since been a cornerstone of technical education and skills development in the country.

The event underscored the importance of technical education as a pathway to employment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth for Lesotho’s youth.
