Young Farmer Khobotlo Transforms Agriculture in Lesotho

In Maputsoe, a young farmer named Khobotlo is changing the face of agriculture. Through determination and innovation, he is reshaping how Basotho youth view farming, proving it can be a path to dignity, prosperity, and sustainability.

Raised in Leribe by his late mother, a factory worker and single parent, Khobotlo’s connection to the land began in their backyard garden. That small plot not only fed the family but also planted in him the belief that agriculture could be a foundation for growth.

After finishing high school at St. Michael’s High School in Mpharane, he faced limited academic opportunities. With only M300 in hand, but guided by his mother’s resilience, he started farming vegetables. What began modestly grew into Khobotlo Agri Solutions Pty Ltd, a business specializing in heirloom seedlings and vegetables grown in successive cycles. The company also provides mentorship and promotes indigenous farming practices that protect soil health and biodiversity.

Despite lacking a college education, Khobotlo pursued learning opportunities wherever possible. He completed climate-smart horticulture training in Beijing, studied agricultural innovation at Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town, and collaborated with Enactus Central University of Technology. He also earned a Google Foundations of Project Management certificate, strengthening his business management skills.

One of his greatest challenges was securing land. As a first-generation farmer without inherited property, he faced skepticism. After persistent negotiations and building trust, he secured a 30-year sublease on 9.1 hectares of land, giving his vision room to grow. “Securing land was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. But once I got it, I knew I had to prove myself through actions,” he said.

His results now speak for themselves. Heirloom vegetable production under Khobotlo Agri Solutions has gained local recognition, and his mentorship programs are inspiring a new generation of Basotho youth. Many who once doubted his methods now respect his consistency and community-driven approach.

Khobotlo combines traditional agricultural knowledge with modern techniques. He emphasizes sustainability through practices like crop rotation and heirloom seed preservation. “I am not just growing vegetables. I am growing hope, self-reliance, and the idea that our land can feed us and our future,” he often reflects.

Looking forward, Khobotlo hopes to expand mentorship programs, strengthen food security in rural communities, and make farming aspirational for young people across Lesotho. His vision is of a future where youth innovate, thrive, and lead in agriculture.

Khobotlo’s journey reflects the Sesotho proverb, “Mohale o tsoa maroleng” — a hero rises from the dust. From humble beginnings, he has built a business and a mission that not only feeds communities but also plants the seeds of a sustainable future for Lesotho.
