SADC and OCHA Launch Induction Training for Second Cohort of Emergency Response Team in Zimbabwe

The Southern African Development Community (SADC), in partnership with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), has launched an induction training course for the second cohort of the SADC Emergency Response Team (ERT). The training runs from August 24 to September 4 in Nyanga, Zimbabwe.
The SADC ERT plays a central role in regional disaster response and forms a key component of the SADC Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre (SHOC), which is based in Nacala, Mozambique. The team is trained to provide rapid, coordinated assistance during emergencies, including natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
This initiative operates under the framework of the SADC Disaster Risk Management Strengthening (DRMSS) project. Funded by the European Union, the DRMSS project aims to build the region’s capacity to manage disasters effectively, reduce risks, and enhance preparedness across member states.
The induction training will equip participants with practical skills in emergency response, coordination, and logistical management. It also emphasizes collaboration among regional partners and international agencies to ensure timely and efficient humanitarian interventions.
By strengthening the SADC ERT, the region aims to improve its readiness to respond to crises, mitigate the impact of disasters on vulnerable populations, and reinforce a coordinated regional approach to disaster management.
The training marks a significant step in enhancing Southern Africa’s disaster response capabilities and reflects ongoing commitments to regional cooperation in humanitarian action.
