Lesotho Taps Hydropower Potential to Drive Economic Growth at TICAD 9

In his keynote address, Prime Minister Sam Matekane highlighted Lesotho’s abundant water resources as a strategic asset for developing hydropower electricity. He described hydropower as more than a source of energy, framing it as an economic lifeline that can generate jobs, reduce youth unemployment, and support poverty alleviation through sustainable industries.

Prime Minister Matekane connected this vision to the broader objectives of TICAD 9, where Japan pledged $5.5 billion in development loans through the African Development Bank. Japan also announced initiatives to train 30,000 AI experts and strengthen innovation across Africa. For Lesotho, these investments present opportunities to integrate hydropower development with digital transformation and youth entrepreneurship. This approach aims to shift young Basotho from job seekers to job creators.

TICAD 9 discussions also focused on climate resilience, healthcare partnerships, and regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). These priorities align with Lesotho’s national development strategy and create avenues for collaboration that support sustainable growth.

As Africa moves toward an “Indian Ocean–Africa Economic Zone,” Lesotho is positioning itself as a reliable source of clean energy and a hub for regional trade. By leveraging its hydropower resources and engaging in technology-driven initiatives, the mountain kingdom seeks to strengthen its economic resilience, create employment, and expand its role in regional markets.
