Lesotho Strengthens Ties with Japan at TICAD 9

This week in Yokohama, Japan, Lesotho reaffirmed its friendship with Japan through a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The discussions focused on deepening cooperation in renewable energy, digital transformation, agriculture, and skills development. These areas are seen as vital pillars for creating opportunities for youth and securing Lesotho’s sustainable future.
Prime Minister Matekane also addressed the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), where he called for stronger global partnerships. His message centered on the urgent need to tackle unemployment, unlock renewable energy potential, and support Africa’s development with fairness and dignity.
He emphasized that although Lesotho is a small nation, it carries a strong voice and firm aspirations. He stressed the government’s determination to ensure that young people have access to decent work, farmers are empowered to thrive, and Basotho as a whole enjoy the dignity of self-reliance.
TICAD 9, held from August 20 to 22, 2025, brings together African leaders, Japanese officials, and international partners to discuss sustainable growth, innovation, and human development. Lesotho’s participation highlights its commitment to engaging with global partners to build resilience and unlock new pathways for economic and social progress.
The meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba and the speech delivered at TICAD underscore Lesotho’s drive to position itself as an active contributor to Africa’s collective development while pursuing tangible outcomes for its people.
