Lesotho Government Hosts India’s Minister of State to Deepen Economic Cooperation

The Government of Lesotho today welcomed His Excellency Mr. Pabitra Margherita, Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs of the Republic of India, during a formal courtesy call at State House in Maseru. The visit marks a key moment in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Lesotho and India.

His Excellency and his delegation were warmly received by the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Lesotho, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Lejone Mpotjoane, Principal Secretary Mr. Thabo Lekhela, and other senior government officials.

In his remarks, Honourable Mpotjoane described the visit as a milestone in the evolving relationship between the two nations, particularly in advancing economic collaboration. He emphasized that discussions focused on expanding Indian investment in Lesotho’s strategic sectors — including agriculture, water, energy, and pharmaceuticals.

“The Republic of India has been a dependable development partner to the Kingdom of Lesotho, and we view this visit as a clear indication of deepening cooperation,” said Mpotjoane. “This engagement is a pathway to unlocking greater opportunities for investment and innovation, especially in areas that are vital to our sustainable development goals.”

The courtesy call provided a platform for both countries to reaffirm their commitment to fostering inclusive growth through mutual support, technology exchange, and public-private partnerships. Special attention was given to the need for resilient infrastructure in agriculture and water management, the expansion of renewable energy solutions, and the potential for pharmaceutical production and supply chain development in Lesotho.

Mr. Margherita conveyed India’s continued support for Lesotho’s development efforts and noted the importance of enhancing trade, education, and capacity-building initiatives. He highlighted India’s willingness to collaborate with Lesotho on priority projects that contribute to economic transformation and improved livelihoods.

The visit is expected to open doors for new bilateral agreements and strengthen India’s role as a trusted ally in Lesotho’s journey toward a more diversified and sustainable economy.

As the two nations continue to foster diplomatic and economic ties, today’s meeting lays the foundation for long-term collaboration that benefits both countries and contributes to regional development in Southern Africa.
