UNFPA Steps Up Push for Youth-Friendly Health Services Amid Alarming Adolescent SRH Trends in Lesotho

Lesotho is grappling with growing concerns around adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH), as unplanned pregnancies, early motherhood, and child marriages continue to threaten the wellbeing and future of the nation’s youth. In response to this urgent crisis, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is intensifying its advocacy for the provision of youth-friendly health services designed to meet the unique needs of adolescents.
The latest data from UNFPA underscores a troubling trend: many young people in Lesotho are unable to access essential SRH services due to persistent stigma, a lack of confidentiality, and judgmental attitudes from healthcare providers. These barriers not only hinder access to contraceptives and counselling but also discourage adolescents from seeking the help they need.
To address these challenges, UNFPA is partnering with the Government of Lesotho and grassroots organizations to promote and expand “youth-friendly corners” in health facilities across the country. These dedicated spaces are designed to offer adolescents confidential and non-judgemental SRH services, including access to contraceptives, personalised medical care, and comprehensive sexuality education.
“Youth-friendly corners are more than just a physical space. They represent a commitment to respect, dignity, and the right of young people to make informed choices about their bodies and their futures,” said a UNFPA representative.
In addition to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, UNFPA is working closely with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Training to introduce and scale up life-skills education in schools. These programmes aim to equip students with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
Community-based interventions are also playing a crucial role in this initiative. UNFPA is supporting the training of peer educators and community health workers who are bridging the information gap in hard-to-reach areas. These trained individuals are vital in disseminating accurate, age-appropriate SRH information and offering young people trusted support within their own communities.
As Lesotho works to reverse the negative trends in adolescent reproductive health, the UNFPA’s multi-sectoral approach highlights the importance of creating safe, accessible, and empowering environments for young people. By championing youth-centred healthcare and education, the country is laying the foundation for a healthier, more informed generation.
