African Parliamentary Press Network and Lesotho Senate Sign MoU to Promote Transparency

In a landmark move aimed at enhancing democratic accountability and fostering improved collaboration, the African Parliamentary Press Network (APPN) and the Senate of Lesotho have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement marks a significant step toward improving the flow of credible information between parliament and the public.
The MoU establishes a formal partnership between the legislative body and journalists reporting on parliamentary affairs. Its key objective is to strengthen communication channels and create an enabling environment where journalists can operate freely and effectively while covering the Senate’s activities. This move is expected to promote greater transparency and public engagement with parliamentary processes in Lesotho.
During the official signing ceremony, the Dean of APPN, Mr. Thoboloko Ntsónyane, highlighted the critical role of the media in advancing democratic governance. “As journalists, we have a duty to uphold transparency and ensure that the people of Lesotho are accurately informed about what their elected representatives are doing,” he stated. “Our partnership with the Senate will help build trust and improve access to information that directly impacts citizens.”
The agreement outlines collaborative initiatives such as capacity-building workshops for journalists, the creation of open communication forums between press and parliamentary officials, and mutual support in advancing the professional standards of political reporting.
Representatives from the Senate also expressed their support for the initiative, noting that a free and well-informed press is essential to a functioning democracy. They reiterated their commitment to working with the media in a spirit of openness and accountability.
The APPN, which represents parliamentary journalists across the African continent, has been instrumental in championing freedom of expression and press access within legislative environments. Its partnership with Lesotho’s Senate is expected to serve as a model for similar agreements across the region.
As the MoU takes effect, both parties are optimistic that this collaboration will usher in a new era of transparency, professionalism, and citizen participation in Lesotho’s democratic process.
