Biting Cold and Rain Hit Qacha’s Nek as Farmers Take Precautions to Protect Livestock

Although snow has spared Qacha’s Nek this season, the district is far from escaping the harsh grip of winter. Residents are enduring biting cold and relentless rain, triggering mixed reactions as they adapt to the challenging conditions.
Farmers, in particular, have been quick to respond to early weather warnings. Mr. Tlotliso Mohlabi from the Matebeng woolshed shared that preparations were made in advance to safeguard livestock. “We relocated sheep and goats to cattle posts and caves, which are relatively warmer, after receiving early weather alerts,” he said. “At the cattle post, it’s not as cold as home, and we made the move after receiving early warning messages.”
Such measures have become essential as temperatures continue to drop. Mr. Mothibeli Makhetha, Chairperson of the Qacha’s Nek Wool and Mohair Growers Association (QWMGA), voiced concern over the impact the cold could have on animals. He warned that the plummeting temperatures could prove fatal for livestock if farmers are not vigilant.
While some farmers took proactive steps, others have been caught off guard by the severity of the weather. The cold and rain are affecting not only agricultural activities but also daily life in Qacha’s Nek, as residents contend with the difficult conditions.
As winter deepens, local communities remain alert, hoping for improved weather conditions while taking every possible precaution to protect their animals and livelihoods. With continued vigilance and preparation, farmers in Qacha’s Nek are determined to weather this challenging season.
