The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mrs. Moliehi Ntene Refutes Allegations on Lack of Funding for Cancer Patient Referrals

In response to recent claims made by Basotho National Party Leader, Mr. Machesetsa Mofomobe, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Moliehi Ntene, has firmly denied allegations that cancer patients are no longer being referred to South African hospitals for care and treatment due to financial constraints.

The claims were made during a session in the National Assembly on Monday, where Mr. Mofomobe, citing reports he had received, raised concerns that the government no longer had the necessary funds to facilitate cancer patient referrals to Bloemfontein, a key destination for specialized cancer care in South Africa.

Mrs. Ntene addressed the matter, clarifying that the government has not halted referrals for cancer treatment due to financial limitations. She emphasized that the Ministry of Health continues to prioritize the health and well-being of the nation’s citizens, particularly in the area of cancer treatment, which requires specialized care not always available domestically.

“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that cancer patients receive the necessary treatment and care. Any insinuations regarding financial constraints impeding these services are unfounded,” Mrs. Ntene stated. She further explained that the referral process continues to operate as usual, with patients being directed to Bloemfontein and other approved hospitals in South Africa when necessary.

Mrs. Ntene also highlighted the government’s efforts to explore long-term solutions to enhance the healthcare system within Lesotho, including expanding local cancer treatment options and improving access to medical services across the country. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to reduce the need for international referrals and ensure better care for Basotho patients.

The Principal Secretary urged the public to rely on verified information from official government sources, especially regarding sensitive health matters. She reassured the citizens of Lesotho that the Ministry of Health remains fully committed to addressing the healthcare needs of the nation, including the treatment of cancer and other critical diseases.
