Basotho from various spheres of life gathered at Thaba-Bosiu on Tuesday to commemorate Moshoeshoe’s Day, an annual event honoring the founder of the Basotho nation. This year’s celebration follows the historic 200-year milestone of the nation’s existence, marked in 2024.
The event was attended by government officials, dignitaries, learners from different schools, and a contingent of 112 Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) officers who participated in a parade. The atmosphere was filled with national pride as attendees paid tribute to Morena Moshoeshoe I, whose leadership laid the foundation for the Basotho people.
Among the young participants was Tefo Hlasa, an 11-year-old learner from Livingstone Primary School. Expressing his appreciation for the event, he reflected on the legacy of Moshoeshoe I.
“I was told that Morena Moshoeshoe I loved and cared for children. Being here today brings memories of those good deeds,” he said in an interview.
He further emphasized the importance of upholding the values Moshoeshoe I envisioned, urging parents to guide their children toward becoming responsible citizens.
“As growing children, we aspire to become the kind of citizens Morena Moshoeshoe had in mind when he fought for the nation,” he added.
The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the unity, resilience, and vision that shaped the Basotho people, inspiring future generations to uphold the principles of peace and nation-building.
