Disaster Management Authority Focuses on Food Aid Amid El Niño Crisis

The Disaster Management Authority’s (DMA) District Manager, Mr. Lebohang Moletsane, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing citizens’ welfare, stating that a nation can only function efficiently if it takes care of its people.

Speaking during the District Disaster Management Team’s (DDMT) monthly meeting, Mr. Moletsane highlighted the ongoing efforts to address food insecurity caused by the El Niño-induced drought. The crisis, which prompted the Prime Minister to declare a national food insecurity disaster, has left many communities in urgent need of assistance.

While acknowledging challenges faced by the Tsoha-O-Iketsetse and Lesupa-Tsela programs, Mr. Moletsane provided updates on food distribution efforts. The DMA has so far supplied maize and wheat to approximately 520 beneficiaries at Mashaleng Community Council, having received 562 bags of grain from the main office in Maseru.

Further relief is expected, as donations of sorghum, wheat, and rice from China and India are set to arrive soon. These supplies will be distributed to communities that have yet to receive any aid, ensuring that more affected households get the assistance they need.

With food insecurity still a pressing concern, the DMA continues to coordinate efforts with various stakeholders to ensure relief reaches vulnerable populations efficiently.
