African Leaders Demand Immediate Ceasefire in Eastern DRC at Historic Summit
On Saturday, African leaders convened in the Tanzanian port city of Dar es Salaam to address the escalating conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The “historic summit,” jointly organized by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), called for an immediate ceasefire and reaffirmed the commitment to finding a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis.
Urgency Amid Escalating Tensions
The summit’s final communique highlighted the critical need for an “immediate ceasefire” and the restoration of supply lines in conflict-stricken areas of the DRC. The March 23 Movement (M23), an armed rebel group, has reportedly advanced toward Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, after consolidating control and establishing a so-called administration in Goma, North Kivu’s capital and a strategic regional hub.
The continued advance of M23 has exacerbated humanitarian challenges and displaced thousands of civilians, prompting urgent calls for action from regional leaders.
Unified Regional Efforts
The meeting brought together heads of state and high-ranking officials from across the region, reflecting the seriousness of the crisis. In a decisive move, the summit directed the Chiefs of Defense Forces from EAC and SADC member states to convene within five days to outline technical measures for enforcing an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
This coordinated effort underscores the need for a unified response to a conflict that has not only destabilized the DRC but also threatened peace and security across the region.
Path Toward a Lasting Solution
The leaders reiterated their commitment to seeking a lasting resolution to the crisis through diplomatic and political avenues. The summit emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict, including governance challenges, resource disputes, and regional security dynamics.
This historic collaboration between the EAC and SADC marks a significant step toward regional solidarity in tackling the complex challenges facing the DRC.
Hope Amid Crisis
While the conflict in eastern DRC remains a pressing issue, the Dar es Salaam summit offers a glimmer of hope for peace. With clear directives and an emphasis on collaboration, African leaders have demonstrated their resolve to end the violence and restore stability to one of the continent’s most troubled regions.
The world will be watching as the EAC-SADC Chiefs of Defense Forces meet in the coming days to turn the summit’s resolutions into actionable steps for peace in the DRC.
