The 16th Chief Justice, Sakoane Sakoane, officiated the opening of the High Court in Maseru on Monday in a ceremony attended by the Prime Minister, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane, alongside other high-ranking officials.
The event began with a moment of silence in honor of Judiciary staff members who passed away over the past year, paying tribute to their contributions to the legal system.
During his address, Chief Justice Sakoane acknowledged the challenges faced by the High Court, including resource shortages and the recent departure of three judges. Despite these obstacles, he expressed optimism about the strides made by the Judiciary over the past year.
Chief among the achievements was the refurbishment of 10 courts across local, central, and high court jurisdictions. These improvements are expected to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of judicial services. He also highlighted the government’s support for a key project to establish a permanent structure for the Southern court in Mohale’s Hoek, which will bring essential legal services closer to communities in the region.
The Chief Justice’s remarks underscored the Judiciary’s resilience and commitment to progress despite limited resources. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the Judiciary and government to ensure the legal system remains effective and accessible to all citizens.
The presence of the Prime Minister and other officials at the event signaled strong government support for the Judiciary’s efforts to address challenges and improve service delivery.
