Two Boys Die of Diarrhoea at Initiation School in Leribe
The District Medical Officer (DMO) for Leribe, Dr. Pusetso Topo, has confirmed the tragic passing of two boys due to diarrhoea at an initiation school in Ha Letele, Matlameng, Leribe. The deaths occurred last week, prompting an immediate response from health authorities.
Dr. Topo explained that the Ministry of Health received a notification and swiftly dispatched the Rapid Response Team to the scene. According to the DMO, the first boy passed away on December 5, but the incident was not reported at the time. The second death occurred on December 10, after which the Ministry was formally notified.
Dr. Topo further revealed that about 51 initiates at the school had suffered from diarrhoea. Many of them received medical attention at Matlameng Health Centre, while others in more severe conditions were taken to Motebang Government Hospital for further treatment.
The outbreak of diarrhoea raises serious concerns about hygiene and access to clean water at initiation schools. Authorities are now working to investigate the root cause of the outbreak and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent further illnesses.
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely, and health officials are urging communities to prioritize proper sanitation and seek medical help immediately when symptoms arise.
The deaths of the two boys serve as a reminder of the critical need for health and safety measures in initiation schools to protect the lives of young initiates.
