Ministry of Gender, Youth, and Social Development Urges Community Support for Persons with Disabilities on International Day of Persons with Disabilities
In commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 4, the Ministry of Gender, Youth, and Social Development, through its Social Development Department, has called on the community of Melele to come together in support of individuals with disabilities. This annual celebration, aimed at raising awareness and promoting the rights of people with disabilities, will encourage inclusivity and active participation across all sectors of society.
Mrs. Mpho Makhetha, Senior Public Relations Officer for the Social Development Department, spoke to the Agency about the importance of community involvement in making the event meaningful. She stressed that this day is not just a time for reflection, but also for action, highlighting the need for local engagement in addressing the challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
The day’s festivities will kick off with a fun walk, which will begin at the district’s main traffic circle and proceed to Melele Ground, the main venue for the day’s activities. The walk will serve as a symbol of solidarity, demonstrating the community’s commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering an environment of inclusion.
Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities designed to raise awareness about disability issues and promote accessibility for all. These include informational sessions, discussions on policy and support systems, as well as entertainment and performances by individuals with disabilities showcasing their talents.
Mrs. Makhetha concluded by urging the people of Melele to actively participate, not only on December 4 but throughout the year, in efforts that empower persons with disabilities and ensure their integration into all aspects of community life. This celebration represents a step towards a more inclusive society, and the Ministry hopes to see widespread support and participation from all sectors.
