Lesotho Holds Validation Workshop for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Policy

On Thursday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Small Business Development hosted a one-day validation workshop for the final draft of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) policy. This policy is expected to be a key driver of economic growth, attracting both foreign and domestic investment while fostering job creation in the country.

The SEZ policy aims to create designated areas where businesses can benefit from favorable economic and regulatory conditions, stimulating industrial growth and innovation. It is viewed as a crucial step in enhancing Lesotho’s economic landscape, positioning the country as an attractive destination for investors.

During the workshop, the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Small Business Development, Mr. Mokhethi Shelile, emphasized the significance of the initiative. “This gathering marks a critical milestone with the introduction of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) policy as Lesotho seeks to address the challenges and seize the opportunities towards business development,” he stated.

The SEZ policy is expected to tackle the country’s economic challenges, such as unemployment and low investment levels, by creating zones with improved infrastructure and tax incentives. The government hopes these zones will boost industrialization and enable Lesotho to compete globally.

The validation workshop served as an opportunity for stakeholders from various sectors to provide feedback on the draft policy, ensuring that it meets the needs of the business community while aligning with national economic goals. With the SEZ policy nearing finalization, Lesotho is poised to take a significant step toward enhancing its business environment and fostering sustainable economic growth.
