Subsidised Farming Inputs for Summer Cropping Now Available
The sale of farming inputs for the upcoming summer cropping season began on Friday, following an announcement made by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Thabo Mofosi. Speaking at a press conference in Maseru, Mr. Mofosi disclosed that these inputs have been subsidised to make them more accessible to farmers across the country.
Fertiliser is being subsidised at 80 percent, while seeds, herbicides, and pesticides are subsidised at 70 percent. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on farmers and encourage increased agricultural production.
Mr. Mofosi also highlighted that block farmers—who farm in organised groups or blocks—will receive additional support. These farmers will be allocated 40 percent of the farming inputs, based on the amount of land they have prepared. This allocation will be overseen by extension officers in collaboration with local authorities, including members of parliament, chiefs, and community councilors.
The subsidy programme is designed to benefit farmers of all scales and is expected to contribute to greater food security and nutrition in the country. With the sale already underway at resource centres nationwide, farmers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity as they prepare for the summer cropping season.
