Environmentalists, Mining, and Energy Experts Meet in Maseru for a Landmark Conference

On Friday, 27 September 2024, environmentalists, mining professionals, and energy experts gathered in Maseru for the one-day Mining and Energy Khotla conference. The event served as a critical platform to address key environmental concerns while exploring innovative technologies and investment opportunities in the extractive industries.

A central focus of the conference was the importance of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and the role of extractive industries in adhering to these standards. Attendees from various sectors emphasized the need for rigorous environmental oversight as Lesotho’s mining and energy sectors continue to grow.

Ms. Nthapeliseng Nthama, representing the Civil Society Organisation Policy Environmental Justice and Water Resources Management (PEWA), highlighted the significance of EIAs during her presentation. She described EIA as a crucial tool used to evaluate the potential environmental consequences of proposed projects. “EIA is not just a formality,” Ms. Nthama stressed, “it is a critical step to ensure that projects do not have detrimental effects on the environment and the communities around them.”

The conference also discussed compliance challenges that extractive industries face in adhering to EIA regulations, with several speakers advocating for stronger enforcement and monitoring mechanisms to ensure environmental safety.

Beyond environmental concerns, the Mining and Energy Khotla explored modern technologies that could improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental harm. Participants discussed renewable energy investments, sustainable mining practices, and the potential for technological innovations to transform Lesotho’s energy landscape.

The event underscored the need for continued collaboration between environmental organizations, the government, and the mining and energy sectors to ensure that development does not come at the expense of the environment.

As the conference drew to a close, stakeholders reiterated their commitment to prioritizing environmental sustainability in future mining and energy projects. The discussions held at the Khotla conference will likely shape the future of Lesotho’s mining and energy sectors, creating a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
