Snowfall Brings Hope and Optimism to Berea District Farmers
Despite the recent cold conditions, farmers in the Berea district are expressing happiness over the early snowfall, highlighting its vital role in providing much-needed moisture for their crops.
Speaking to the Lesotho News Agency (LENA), Lekokoaneng potato farmer Mr. Mojalefa Mokotso mentioned that while many were surprised by the snowfall, especially in the lowlands, farmers see it as an opportunity to enhance their production.
Mokotso explained that the snowfall came at a perfect time as they were starting their winter cropping, planting frost-resistant crops like wheat and peas, which they expect to harvest in November or December.
He emphasized that farmers should view the snowfall as a welcome relief after enduring months of drought. The recent snowfall, he added, is crucial for improving soil moisture levels.
“Early snowfall is the best weather event for winter cropping as it maintains soil moisture at an optimal level, neither too dry nor too wet for crops,” he explained.
Another farmer, Mrs. Matoka Motjetje, shared that they were hesitant to start winter cropping due to the dry conditions, but the snowfall has renewed their hopes. She anticipates a better harvest, with the wheat and peas expected to grow faster.
Echoing these sentiments, Mrs. Masehlabaka Lebina, Chairperson of the Berea Business Forum, said the snowfall has boosted their morale, and plans are already underway to sow wheat and peas. She also intends to plant cabbage and other vegetables using the available moisture.
Lebina urged other farmers to take advantage of the current moisture to promote food security.
Berea is one of the lowland districts that experienced snowfall over the past two days.
