Official Launch of Digital Environment Mapping Strengthens Lesotho’s Cultural and Creative Sector in the Digital Era

The official launch of the Digital Environment Mapping marks an important step for Lesotho’s cultural and creative sector as it moves deeper into the digital economy. The initiative is designed to generate an evidence based understanding of opportunities, barriers and institutional gaps that affect how the sector operates and grows. It focuses on how digital transformation is reshaping creative industries such as music, film, design, crafts and cultural heritage services. The process is supported by UNESCO and brings together both international and national expertise to ensure accurate and practical insights. The launch reflects a growing recognition that cultural industries need structured data and clear analysis to compete in modern digital markets. It also highlights Lesotho’s commitment to strengthening policy frameworks that support creative talent and innovation.
The Digital Environment Mapping exercise is being facilitated by UNESCO international expert David Waweru together with national expert Mpho Letima. Their combined expertise is guiding the assessment of how digital tools, platforms and infrastructure are influencing creative work in Lesotho. The mapping process examines how artists and cultural practitioners access digital platforms, distribute content and generate income. It also looks at challenges such as limited infrastructure, skills gaps and uneven access to digital markets. By collecting and analysing this information, the initiative aims to build a clearer picture of what is needed to strengthen the sector. The involvement of both international and local experts ensures that the findings reflect global standards while remaining grounded in local realities.
A key focus of the initiative is identifying opportunities that can help grow Lesotho’s creative economy in a sustainable way. This includes exploring how digital platforms can expand market access for local artists beyond national borders. It also examines how improved digital skills training can empower young creatives to participate more actively in online industries. The mapping process further highlights institutional gaps that may limit policy coordination or investment in the creative sector. By addressing these gaps, stakeholders aim to create a more supportive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship. The exercise also encourages collaboration between government institutions, private sector actors and cultural practitioners to build a more connected ecosystem.
The launch of the Digital Environment Mapping represents a strategic move toward strengthening Lesotho’s position in the global creative economy. It provides a foundation for evidence based decision making that can guide future policy and investment in the sector. The insights generated will support the development of targeted programmes that address real challenges faced by creative professionals. With the guidance of UNESCO and the expertise of both international and national specialists, the initiative is expected to deliver practical outcomes that benefit the wider cultural community. It also reinforces the importance of digital transformation as a driver of economic growth and cultural expression. Ultimately, the project sets the stage for a more resilient, inclusive and digitally empowered creative sector in Lesotho.
