UNDP and MISA Lesotho Strengthen Partnership to Advance Media Freedom and Development in Lesotho

The meeting between the United Nations Development Programme and MISA Lesotho marked an important step toward strengthening collaboration in the country’s media and development space. UNDP Resident Representative Jacqueline Olweya engaged with the newly appointed MISA Lesotho Chairperson Khotsofalang Koli and his team to explore ways of deepening cooperation. The discussions focused on reinforcing existing partnerships while identifying new areas of joint action that can support national development priorities. Both sides acknowledged the critical role that media plays in shaping informed societies and strengthening democratic governance. The engagement reflected a shared understanding that collaboration between development actors and media institutions is essential for long term progress in Lesotho.
At the centre of the discussions was a strong commitment to building a media environment that is independent, vibrant, and capable of serving the public interest. The Media Institute of Southern Africa Lesotho emphasized its role in promoting press freedom and protecting the rights of journalists across the country. The conversation highlighted the importance of media that not only reports events but also encourages accountability and transparency in both public and private institutions. Attention was also given to the need for accurate information that empowers citizens to make informed decisions about their lives and communities. Both parties agreed that a strong media sector contributes directly to democratic stability and social cohesion.
The United Nations Development Programme reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote inclusive dialogue and strengthen governance systems in Lesotho. UNDP emphasized its ongoing efforts to work with media partners to expand access to reliable information and support sustainable development outcomes. The organisation highlighted that collaboration with media institutions is key to ensuring that development efforts are understood, transparent, and responsive to the needs of citizens. It also stressed the importance of building capacity within the media sector to adapt to changing information environments. This includes strengthening skills, supporting innovation, and encouraging ethical reporting practices that uphold public trust.
The discussions also reflected a broader vision for the future of media development in Lesotho, where cooperation between international partners and local institutions plays a central role. There was agreement that sustained engagement is necessary to address challenges such as misinformation, limited resources, and evolving digital platforms. Both sides expressed interest in expanding joint programmes that can support media sustainability and strengthen public accountability mechanisms. The meeting reinforced the idea that media is not only a communication tool but also a driver of development and civic participation. Continued partnership between UNDP and MISA Lesotho is expected to contribute to a more informed society where citizens are better equipped to participate in national development processes.
