Digital Public Infrastructure Workshop Aims to Empower Children in Lesotho

The Ministry of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), in partnership with UNICEF, is hosting a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Workshop for Children in Maseru from 1–2 April 2026. The workshop will focus on exploring how digital systems can improve service delivery while ensuring the protection and inclusion of children in Lesotho. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that digital technologies can drive social and economic development when implemented responsibly. By centering children in these efforts, the government aims to create a foundation for a digitally empowered generation. This approach emphasizes both access to technology and safeguards that protect young users in an increasingly connected world.

Speaking at the event, Principal Secretary Mr. Kanono Ramashamole outlined the government’s vision for a digitally empowered society. He stressed that secure technologies are essential for building an inclusive economy and highlighted that children must remain a central focus in these developments. Mr. Ramashamole noted that digital public infrastructure has the potential to scale services efficiently, while simultaneously safeguarding children’s rights in the digital space. He emphasized the importance of integrating safety, accessibility, and inclusivity into every level of technological planning. By doing so, Lesotho can ensure that its future workforce is digitally literate and able to contribute meaningfully to the national economy.

UNICEF Resident Representative Mr. Deepak Bhaskaran highlighted the significance of strengthening systems that support children through safe and inclusive digital platforms. He pointed out that a secure digital environment is critical for protecting children from online risks while providing opportunities for learning and engagement. Mr. Bhaskaran also stressed that digital systems must be responsive to children’s specific needs, including access to education, health services, and social support. The partnership between MICSTI and UNICEF reflects an integrated approach that combines government oversight with international expertise. This collaboration is designed to ensure that digital initiatives benefit children without exposing them to unnecessary harm.

Director General of the Department of Information Communication and Technology, Mr. Thapeli Tjabane, highlighted the role of innovation in enhancing government service delivery. He explained that leveraging digital tools can improve efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness across public services. Innovation in digital infrastructure can also reduce barriers to access, allowing children in remote or underserved areas to benefit from essential services. The workshop aims to explore these solutions in detail, identifying priorities and strategies that align with national development goals. By focusing on practical, scalable approaches, the event seeks to create lasting improvements in how digital systems serve the youngest members of society.

The DPI Workshop is expected to produce actionable solutions and establish clear priorities for strengthening Lesotho’s digital public infrastructure. By ensuring that these systems remain secure, inclusive, and child-focused, the government aims to support a future where all children can safely benefit from digital technologies. The initiative also underscores the country’s commitment to combining innovation with social responsibility, creating a model for other nations in the region. With coordinated efforts between MICSTI, UNICEF, and ICT authorities, Lesotho is taking meaningful steps toward a digitally empowered, inclusive society. The workshop represents an important milestone in building resilient, child-centered digital infrastructure that can drive long-term social and economic development.
