Lesotho Joins SADC Missions in Berlin to Commemorate Southern Africa Liberation Day

Lesotho recently participated in the commemoration of Southern Africa Liberation Day, joining other SADC missions at Angola House in Berlin. Observed annually on 23 March, this Day was established by the 38th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government in Windhoek in August 2018. The date holds historical significance as it marks the end of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale on 23 March 1988, widely regarded as a decisive turning point in the region’s struggle for political independence. The event in Berlin brought together diplomats, defence attachés, and representatives from SADC member states to reflect on the achievements and ongoing challenges of Southern Africa’s liberation efforts. Lesotho’s presence reinforced the country’s commitment to regional solidarity and the promotion of collective historical memory.
Ambassador Molala served as the Programme Director for the Berlin commemoration, overseeing a structured programme that emphasized both reflection and dialogue. The event featured speeches and reflections by Defence Attachés, highlighting the role of military strategy and cooperation in the liberation movements of Southern Africa. A panel discussion led by Ambassadors from SADC member states further explored the contemporary significance of the Day, focusing on regional integration and the shared responsibilities of member countries. Participants examined how lessons from past struggles can inform current diplomatic and socio-economic collaboration within the SADC framework. The discussion reinforced the importance of unity, collective agency, and sustained engagement in addressing regional challenges.
The commemoration concluded with a networking reception, providing an opportunity for diplomats and officials to exchange ideas and strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations. The event highlighted not only the historical achievements of Southern Africa’s liberation movements but also the continued relevance of collaboration in advancing political stability, economic development, and social cohesion across the region. By joining this commemoration, Lesotho reaffirmed its dedication to SADC principles and its commitment to collective progress. Such engagements promote dialogue, build mutual understanding, and ensure that the history of liberation remains a guiding framework for contemporary regional initiatives. The Berlin event successfully combined remembrance, reflection, and forward-looking strategies, illustrating how historical commemoration can serve as a platform for active diplomacy and regional cooperation.
