Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane Outlines Ambitious Development Plans for Lesotho

The Leader of Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) and current Prime Minister of Lesotho, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane, has outlined a comprehensive vision for the development of the country during the RFP Annual Conference held in Maseru this past weekend. Speaking to party members, Mr. Matekane emphasized that the remaining two years of the current term will see accelerated progress across multiple sectors, with the hope of continuing into the next term following upcoming elections. He stressed that the government’s agenda focuses on improving infrastructure, enhancing public services, and promoting economic growth to benefit every Mosotho. Central to his message was the commitment to long-term development, including the provision of electricity and modern roads in all districts, as well as supporting sectors critical to national prosperity. The Prime Minister’s address painted a picture of a forward-looking government determined to transform Lesotho through strategic investments and national reforms.

Mr. Matekane highlighted several infrastructure projects aimed at improving the daily lives of Basotho and boosting tourism. The rehabilitation of roads and towns will include improved lighting to enhance safety and encourage tourism growth. Plans are underway to purchase vehicles for police, correctional facilities, and local councils to strengthen service delivery. He revealed that preparations for constructing tarred roads connecting the country are at an advanced stage, a move expected to improve trade and mobility. Additionally, the rehabilitation of Moshoeshoe I International Airport is set to be completed in October, providing a modern gateway for travelers and supporting economic development. These initiatives are part of a broader plan to ensure Lesotho is better connected internally and externally, creating opportunities for businesses and communities alike.

Energy access remains a top priority, with Mr. Matekane reiterating his pledge that by 2030, every Mosotho will have electricity. This commitment will extend to all districts, ensuring consistent power supply to support households, schools, and businesses. The government also plans to improve water access, addressing essential needs and fostering sustainable development. Agriculture is another critical focus, with initiatives aimed at increasing food security and positioning Lesotho as a supplier of agricultural products to neighboring countries. By enhancing farming techniques, investing in irrigation, and supporting smallholder farmers, the government aims to strengthen the sector and promote self-sufficiency. These measures are intended to complement infrastructure improvements and drive overall economic stability.

Beyond infrastructure and energy, the Prime Minister underscored national reforms and social initiatives designed to foster peace, stability, and transparency. Job creation for youth remains a key target, alongside strengthening education systems to prepare the next generation for meaningful employment. Programs for the elderly and persons with disabilities are being prioritized to ensure inclusive development that leaves no citizen behind. The government also plans to expand network coverage across the country, improving communication and access to digital services. In addition, the promotion of tourism, sports, and cultural activities is intended to unite communities and generate new revenue streams. Mr. Matekane specifically mentioned the construction of an international-standard stadium to support sports development and encourage national unity.

The Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing unity and peaceful resolution of conflicts as essential to achieving these ambitious goals. He reminded citizens that the success of planned developments depends on collaboration between government, communities, and stakeholders. Since its founding in March 2022, RFP has led a coalition government with the Alliance of Democrats (AD) and Movement for Economic Change (MEC), striving to implement reforms that deliver tangible benefits to Basotho. Mr. Matekane’s address reflected a long-term strategy to transform Lesotho through infrastructure, social services, and economic initiatives, laying a foundation for sustainable growth and improved quality of life for all citizens.
