Lesotho Launches Electricity Grid Connection Projects in Makatseng and Phahameng

The Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Molomi Moleko, officially introduced construction companies tasked with implementing electricity grid connection projects in Makatseng and Phahameng, located in the Sempe constituency. Valued at over M45 million, these projects will bring electricity to more than 711 households in Phahameng and 52 households in Makatseng. The Phahameng project is slated for completion by November 2026, while the Makatseng connection is expected to be finished by February 2027. Lesehe Electricity Connection Company will carry out the Makatseng project, and Treasure Investment Group will implement the Phahameng project. Minister Moleko emphasized that these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring universal electricity access for all households in Lesotho by 2030, signaling a major step toward improved infrastructure and quality of life in rural communities.
During his address, Minister Moleko highlighted the broader national agenda to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on foreign electricity. He announced plans to construct large fuel storage tanks within the current financial year to protect the country from disruptions in global fuel supply caused by international conflicts, citing ongoing tensions involving America, Israel, and Iran as a potential risk. He also indicated that in the coming financial year, the government will invest in electricity generation and transmission infrastructure to reduce reliance on imports from South Africa and Mozambique. These measures aim to create a more resilient energy sector capable of supporting economic growth and meeting the increasing demand for electricity across Lesotho. The projects in Makatseng and Phahameng form part of a larger strategic effort to ensure rural and urban communities alike have reliable access to power.
Community leaders and local representatives expressed strong support for the initiatives, acknowledging the transformative impact of electricity on households and local economies. Phahameng community councilor, Mr. Tumaole Tsoelipe, expressed gratitude for the project and pledged community cooperation to ensure its long-term success. Similarly, the Member of Parliament for Mount Moorosi Constituency, Mr. Thuso Mosetlelo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing development projects that improve living standards. The involvement of local communities in the planning and execution of the projects is expected to enhance sustainability and create a sense of ownership among residents. These electricity connections will not only improve domestic living conditions but also support small businesses, education, and health services by providing reliable power access.
The electricity grid connection projects in Makatseng and Phahameng represent a critical advancement in Lesotho’s national development agenda. By bringing power to hundreds of households, the government is addressing basic infrastructure needs while promoting energy independence and long-term resilience. Minister Moleko’s announcements on fuel storage and electricity generation further demonstrate a comprehensive strategy to safeguard the country against external energy shocks. The active support from community leaders and the involvement of experienced construction companies will help ensure the projects are delivered efficiently and sustainably. These initiatives signal a strong commitment to modernizing Lesotho’s energy landscape and improving the quality of life for rural communities.
