Lesotho Accredits New High Commissioner to Mozambique

His Excellency Mr. Ntsime Jafeta presented his Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Mozambique, His Excellency Mr. Daniel Francisco Chapo, officially accrediting him as the High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Lesotho to Mozambique. The ceremony took place on February 18, 2026, at the Presidential Palace in Maputo. Mr. Jafeta will serve on a non-residential basis from Pretoria, South Africa, covering diplomatic relations and cooperation between the two countries. This appointment reinforces longstanding ties between Lesotho and Mozambique, which have been collaborating since Mozambique gained independence in 1975. Both nations continue to engage actively at bilateral and multilateral levels, including within the Southern African Development Community, the African Union, the United Nations, and the Commonwealth.

During his remarks, High Commissioner Jafeta highlighted the need to strengthen economic cooperation and strategic partnerships across key sectors. He identified renewable energy as a priority, building on Mozambique’s role as a regional energy hub. Agriculture and infrastructure development were also emphasized as areas where shared technical expertise can enhance trade and improve food security. The High Commissioner underscored that these initiatives aim to create sustainable growth and mutual benefits for both countries. By focusing on these sectors, Lesotho seeks to deepen practical collaboration beyond diplomatic relations.

President Chapo acknowledged Lesotho’s support for regional security, specifically the country’s contribution to the SADC Mission in Mozambique to address insurgency in Cabo Delgado. He expressed gratitude for the partnership and reaffirmed Mozambique’s commitment to continued cooperation with Lesotho. The High Commissioner’s appointment signals a renewed focus on strengthening political, economic, and social links. Both nations are positioned to benefit from enhanced trade, investment, and technical collaboration. This engagement sets the stage for a more robust and mutually beneficial relationship in the Southern African region.
