Lesotho Police and Roads Directorate Join Forces to Boost Road Safety

On February 5, 2026, the Lesotho Mounted Police Service signed a cooperation agreement with the Roads Directorate at Police Headquarters in Maseru. The partnership aims to enhance road safety, improve traffic management, and promote responsible use of road infrastructure across the country. Officials emphasized that safer roads depend not only on maintenance but also on public awareness and compliance with traffic regulations. This agreement formalizes the joint efforts of law enforcement and road management authorities to address common challenges that affect travel safety. By combining resources and expertise, both organizations aim to reduce accidents and protect road users nationwide.
The Director of the Roads Directorate, Teboho Mokhoane, highlighted the department’s role in maintaining roads and ensuring safe travel for all. He pointed out that the department faces ongoing challenges, including damage to road boundaries and electric robots. Mokhoane explained that the police will assist in expanding road safety awareness among Basotho, helping citizens understand the importance of respecting road boundaries and following traffic rules. This proactive approach is designed to prevent accidents and enhance the longevity of road infrastructure.
Commissioner of Police, Adv. Borotho Matsoso, welcomed the collaboration, noting that the agreement will support proper placement and visibility of road signs. He emphasized that clear signage reduces the risk of accidents by providing drivers with timely and accurate guidance. The partnership will also strengthen the enforcement of safety measures and ensure that communication about traffic regulations reaches all communities. Matsoso stressed that combining policing with road management expertise creates a more effective system for protecting motorists, pedestrians, and other road users.
The cooperation agreement signals a shared commitment between the Lesotho Mounted Police Service and the Roads Directorate to prioritize public safety. Both organizations will work together to monitor road conditions, address hazards, and promote awareness campaigns targeting drivers and pedestrians. This initiative is expected to improve overall travel safety, reduce road-related injuries, and build a culture of responsible driving in Lesotho.
By joining forces, the LMPS and Roads Directorate are setting a precedent for collaborative approaches to national road safety. The agreement demonstrates that combining enforcement, infrastructure management, and public education is essential to preventing accidents and ensuring safer journeys for all Basotho. This partnership reflects a long-term vision for a secure and well-maintained road network that benefits citizens and supports national development.
