Lesotho to Host National Conference on Transitional Justice

On November 25, 2025, the Office of the Prime Minister announced that a national conference on transitional justice will take place from November 27 to 28, 2025, at Avani, Lesotho. The conference aims to bring together representatives from different communities to discuss strategies that promote peace, unity, truth, justice, and reconciliation in the country.
The Honourable Richard Ramoeletsi, Minister of Justice and Law, addressed journalists in Maseru, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue. He stated that the conference will provide a platform to study methods for resolving conflicts in Lesotho and to develop sustainable solutions that ensure justice accompanies peace. He highlighted that peace without justice is not sustainable and that lessons will be drawn from other countries that have successfully navigated similar challenges.
Minister Ramoeletsi explained that the conference will guide the creation of a legal framework aligned with the African Union’s Transitional Justice principles. This framework will serve as a blueprint for addressing past conflicts and promoting reconciliation across the nation.
Over 100 participants are expected to attend, including representatives from civil society, political parties from both the opposition and the government, and international experts. The conference marks a significant step in Lesotho’s ongoing efforts to strengthen social cohesion and establish mechanisms for justice and reconciliation that reflect the nation’s commitment to lasting peace.
