Roof of Africa Race in Maseru Draws Young Riders and International Competitors

The much-anticipated Roof of Africa, widely known as the ‘Mother of Hard Enduro,’ officially kicks off in Maseru on Friday, attracting both seasoned riders and young enthusiasts. The event continues to capture attention for its challenging terrain and high-level competition.
Fifteen-year-old Bafokeng Mphoka shared with the Agency that his passion for motorcycling began at a very young age, inspired by his father. “Ever since I could ride on my own, my interest in the race has grown stronger each year,” he said. Mphoka hopes to compete in the Roof of Africa when he reaches the required age, noting that he learns new skills annually by observing the champions.
Acknowledging the risks involved, Mphoka emphasized that proper practice and experience allow riders to master techniques and improve safety. He also encouraged girls to take up the sport, highlighting that early exposure builds confidence and makes it easier to master advanced skills later.
International competitor Sandra Gómez from Spain, a veteran of global hard enduro events, shared her ambitions for this year’s race. Having previously earned various medals, Gómez is now aiming for gold, reflecting the high level of competition the event attracts.
The Roof of Africa continues to serve as a platform for skill development, international collaboration, and the promotion of motorcycling among youth. With a mix of local talent and global participants, this year’s race promises excitement, challenging courses, and inspiring performances for spectators and aspiring riders alike.
