African Union PRC Convenes to Advance Agenda 2063 Priorities as Lesotho Reaffirms Commitment to Continental Development

The African Union Permanent Representatives’ Committee has opened its Fifty-Second Ordinary Session at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives from across the continent. The session runs from 03 to 17 June 2026 and focuses on key institutional, governance, financial and development matters that shape Africa’s long-term integration agenda. It comes at a critical time as the African Union prepares for upcoming high-level meetings, including the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Egypt. Member states are expected to align their positions on major continental priorities that will guide policy implementation in the months ahead. Lesotho is among the participating states, reaffirming its active role in advancing Africa’s shared development goals.

The discussions at the PRC session are closely tied to the implementation of Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term blueprint for inclusive growth and sustainable development. Delegates are reviewing institutional reforms aimed at improving accountability, transparency and operational efficiency within AU structures. Financial oversight and budgetary management also form a central part of the agenda, with member states assessing how resources are allocated and monitored across programmes. Strategic partnerships and multilateral cooperation are under review as Africa continues to strengthen its global engagement and development financing mechanisms. The session also places strong emphasis on continental trade integration, including progress under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

Lesotho has reiterated its commitment to constructive participation in the PRC deliberations, with H.E. Ambassador Ntšiuoa Sekete, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the African Union, highlighting the importance of the session for national and continental development alignment. She noted that the outcomes of the discussions will directly inform Lesotho’s development priorities under the National Strategic Development Plan II for 2024 to 2028. She also stressed that Agenda 2063 remains central to Lesotho’s long-term planning and policy direction. According to her, stronger institutional efficiency within the African Union is essential for delivering tangible results to African citizens. Lesotho continues to support reforms that promote a more responsive and accountable continental governance system.

Water security and sanitation have emerged as key thematic priorities under the African Union Theme of the Year 2026, which focuses on ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems. Ambassador Sekete emphasized that water governance is closely linked to broader issues of peace, food security, climate resilience and public health across the continent. She highlighted that countries such as Lesotho, which hold significant water resources, play a strategic role in regional water diplomacy and cross-border resource management. Sustainable water systems are seen as essential for supporting agriculture, strengthening health systems and improving social protection outcomes. Member states are expected to align policies that support equitable and efficient water use across regions.

The PRC session is also reviewing progress on major continental institutions and initiatives, including the African Continental Free Trade Area, Africa CDC and the Africa Medicines Agency. These institutions are central to improving trade integration, public health coordination and pharmaceutical regulation across Africa. Delegates are also considering updates on AU partnership frameworks, governance structures and financing mechanisms designed to support Agenda 2063 implementation. Institutional reforms remain a recurring theme, with member states seeking to enhance efficiency, reduce duplication and strengthen accountability across AU organs. These discussions are expected to shape policy recommendations for upcoming Executive Council deliberations.

Lesotho has expressed strong support for ongoing African Union reform efforts aimed at improving financial sustainability and institutional performance. Ambassador Sekete stated that Africa’s institutions must continuously adapt to changing global economic, political and technological environments. She emphasized that reform is necessary to ensure the African Union remains effective and capable of delivering development outcomes that directly benefit citizens. The discussions also extend to future planning, including the roadmap for the 2027 AU Theme, which will coincide with the African Union’s 25th anniversary. Key focus areas include the Single African Air Transport Market and the role of emerging technologies in advancing regional connectivity and economic integration.

The Kingdom of Lesotho has reaffirmed its broader commitment to multilateral cooperation, Pan-African solidarity, peace, good governance and sustainable development as the PRC session continues. The country maintains that continental integration must be practical, inclusive and driven by innovation to achieve meaningful economic transformation. Strengthening infrastructure, digital systems and trade connectivity remains central to unlocking Africa’s full economic potential under AfCFTA. Lesotho’s participation reflects its continued engagement in shaping policies that support both national development and continental progress. The PRC session is expected to produce key recommendations that will influence Africa’s development trajectory under Agenda 2063.
