Ramela Foundation Announces Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race 2026

The Ramela Foundation held a press conference on Tuesday to unveil plans for the upcoming Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race, set to take place on April 18, 2026, in Peka. The event aims to create employment opportunities for Basotho while promoting tourism and contributing to the country’s economic growth. Bishop Thakadu Ramela, founder of the foundation, highlighted the importance of expanding support for the race, noting that sponsorship has increased this year to over M2.5 million, up from M500,000 the previous year. He encouraged businesses to participate in supporting the initiative to ensure its sustainability and long-term success. Bishop Ramela emphasized that the foundation remains committed to giving back to the nation through initiatives that combine cultural celebration with economic empowerment.

Bishop Ramela’s vision for the Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race goes beyond sport, aiming to position it as a key cultural and economic event. The race provides a platform to showcase Lesotho’s rich equestrian heritage and to attract international attention. Mr Elliot Lehora, President of the Equestrian Association of Lesotho, praised Bishop Ramela for his ongoing support of horse racing and broader sports development in the country. He pointed out that last year’s event featured 15 horses from South Africa, highlighting the growing regional significance of the race. Mr Lehora also noted the increasing participation of women in the sport, with three women from Maseru and two from Matsoku competing, which he described as a major step in promoting inclusivity in Lesotho’s equestrian scene.

The Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race is not only a sporting event but also a cultural showcase for Lesotho. Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo, Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, emphasized the potential of the race to boost tourism while celebrating Basotho culture. He stressed that the event should bring tangible benefits to both the nation and the local community of Peka. The minister recognized the second edition of the event as a celebration of Basotho resilience and a tribute to the cultural significance of horses as symbols of pride. He also expressed gratitude to Bishop Ramela and encouraged private sector involvement, noting that partnerships are crucial to enhancing the impact of such initiatives on national development.

Through the Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race, the Ramela Foundation seeks to inspire communities and particularly youth by promoting cultural heritage and economic growth. The event provides opportunities for employment, tourism, and international exposure, while emphasizing the importance of preserving Basotho traditions. By integrating sports, culture, and economic development, the foundation demonstrates how targeted initiatives can support national progress. The increased sponsorship and growing participation from women and international competitors signal the event’s rising prominence. In conclusion, the Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race is set to become a cornerstone event for Lesotho, combining pride, purpose, and sustainable growth while celebrating the enduring spirit of the Basotho people.
