Lesotho Strengthens Democratic Processes Through Successful SADC Electoral Stakeholder Training in Maseru

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations has marked the successful conclusion of the Southern African Development Community Training of Electoral Stakeholders held in the Kingdom of Lesotho. The programme took place in Maseru from 13 to 17 April 2026 and brought together key electoral role players from across different sectors. The training focused on strengthening electoral systems and improving the quality of democratic processes in the country and the wider region. It also highlighted the importance of continuous learning for those involved in managing and supporting elections. The Ministry described the initiative as an important step in reinforcing credible and transparent governance structures in Lesotho.
The closing ceremony was officiated by Ms. Limpho Masilo-Motsamai, who serves as Deputy Principal Secretary and Acting Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations. In her address, she praised participants for their dedication and active engagement throughout the training programme. She emphasised that capacity building remains essential for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that electoral processes are fair and effective. Her remarks reflected the government’s commitment to improving the skills and knowledge of stakeholders involved in elections. She also encouraged participants to apply the lessons learned to strengthen electoral credibility and public trust in democratic outcomes.
The week-long training was organised in collaboration with the Southern African Development Community and brought together a diverse group of electoral stakeholders. Participants included individuals involved in election management, oversight bodies and related governance structures. The programme covered key areas such as electoral integrity, transparency, voter education and inclusive participation. It also provided a platform for sharing experiences and best practices across member states. At the end of the training, participants received certificates recognising their commitment to promoting credible, transparent and inclusive elections. The certification process served as both recognition and motivation for continued professional development in electoral matters.
The initiative forms part of broader regional efforts to strengthen democratic governance across Southern Africa. By working closely with SADC, Lesotho continues to align its electoral systems with regional principles and standards. The training reinforced the importance of cooperation between member states in building resilient democratic institutions. It also highlighted the role of knowledge sharing in addressing common electoral challenges. Through such programmes, countries are able to improve electoral management practices while also strengthening public confidence in democratic processes. The collaboration demonstrates a shared regional vision for stability, accountability and good governance.
The Kingdom of Lesotho remains firmly committed to the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections. This commitment supports ongoing efforts to promote peace, stability and sustainable development within the country and across the region. The successful conclusion of the training in Maseru reflects Lesotho’s dedication to improving electoral systems through structured capacity building initiatives. It also shows the value placed on partnerships that support democratic growth and institutional strengthening. With continued engagement and cooperation, Lesotho is positioning itself to further enhance the integrity of its electoral processes. This initiative marks another important step in building a stronger democratic future for the nation and its citizens.
