Vodacom Lesotho and Partners Launch Initiative to Empower Female Herders in Mokhotlong

Vodacom Lesotho, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Community Development, UNFPA Lesotho, Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, Nedbank Lesotho, and Letšeng Diamond Mine, has launched a transformative project aimed at empowering female herders in Mokhotlong district. The initiative targets 130 women, equipping them with practical skills in safety, sexual health awareness, and gender-based violence (GBV) education. By focusing on these critical areas, the project ensures that female herders are informed, protected, and confident in their work environments. The launch reflects a commitment to inclusive development, recognizing the importance of supporting women who play key roles in rural livelihoods and community well-being. It also highlights the potential of collaboration between government, private sector, and international partners in driving meaningful change.

The project began with a week-long training session at the Matsoaing Shepherds’ School, where participants received in-depth guidance on safety protocols, sexual health, and GBV prevention. These sessions provided practical knowledge that female herders can apply in their daily work, including strategies to protect themselves and others. In addition, the project offered interactive discussions with young people to promote awareness of sexual health and safe practices. To support learning and technology access, participants were provided with computers and internet connectivity, enabling them to engage with educational resources online. These tools are intended to expand opportunities for knowledge, improve digital literacy, and equip female herders with skills to navigate a modern, connected world.

Beyond education, the project provided essential equipment and supplies to improve the daily work experience of female herders. Each participant received boots, overalls, towels, soap, detergent, and other materials needed for safe and hygienic herding. These provisions address immediate needs while fostering dignity and respect for the herders’ labor. By combining practical support with skill-building, the initiative ensures that participants are prepared both physically and mentally for the challenges of their work. It also demonstrates a holistic approach to empowerment, emphasizing the importance of health, safety, and self-sufficiency in rural livelihoods.

The initiative represents a broader commitment by stakeholders to build a society of resilient, informed, and capable future leaders. By focusing on health, safety, gender equality, and digital skills, the project nurtures individuals who can protect vulnerable community members and contribute to economic growth. Partners including the Ministry of Agriculture, UNFPA, Vodacom Lesotho, LHDA, Nedbank Lesotho, and Letšeng Diamonds aim to create a model for inclusive rural development that prioritizes the well-being of women and youth. The combination of practical resources, training, and access to technology positions participants to pursue greater opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and community leadership.

The launch of this empowerment project in Mokhotlong district marks a significant step toward improving the lives of female herders and strengthening communities across Lesotho. By addressing safety, sexual health, GBV awareness, and digital literacy, the initiative equips women with tools to thrive both personally and professionally. The holistic approach, combining training, equipment, and technology, reflects the commitment of all partners to inclusive and sustainable development. Through this project, female herders gain the skills, confidence, and support necessary to become leaders in their communities while contributing to the country’s economic and social growth.
