Lesotho Strengthens HIV Prevention with Introduction of Lenacapavir Injections

The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho has taken a significant step in enhancing HIV prevention by receiving a consignment of Lenacapavir injections. The delivery, made at the National Drug Service in Mafeteng, was supported by the Global Fund and the United States of America. This initiative reflects Lesotho’s ongoing commitment to tackling HIV and reducing new infections, particularly among individuals at higher risk. By introducing this advanced preventive method, the country is aligning with global best practices in HIV management. The shipment represents a proactive approach to public health, emphasizing both innovation and accessibility in preventive care.
Speaking during the handover, Minister of Health, Honourable Selibe Mochoboroane, described Lenacapavir as a next-generation HIV prevention intervention designed for people who are HIV-negative but at substantial risk of infection. The method involves two injections per year administered by qualified health practitioners, who first assess eligibility and vulnerability. This ensures that the intervention is targeted and effective, reaching those most in need. The biannual administration simplifies adherence compared to daily oral preventive treatments, reducing barriers for at-risk populations. The approach is intended to complement existing preventive strategies, including behavioral education and community outreach.
The initial consignment includes 3,000 injections, with an additional 6,500 doses expected around June 2026. This phased rollout allows the Ministry of Health to monitor effectiveness, refine delivery mechanisms, and ensure safe administration. Minister Mochoboroane emphasized that while Lenacapavir offers robust HIV protection, it does not prevent sexually transmitted infections or unwanted pregnancies. He urged the public to continue using condoms and other preventive measures for comprehensive protection. This dual approach reinforces the need for a combination of biomedical and behavioral strategies to achieve long-term public health outcomes.
Honourable Mochoboroane also acknowledged the critical role of international support in expanding HIV prevention efforts. He expressed gratitude to the United States Government, the Global Fund, and other development partners for their continued contributions to healthcare initiatives. These partnerships have been instrumental in providing resources, technical expertise, and capacity-building support that enable Lesotho to implement innovative interventions. By leveraging international collaboration, the Ministry of Health can strengthen service delivery and ensure that preventive programs reach the populations that need them most.
The introduction of Lenacapavir injections marks a significant milestone in Lesotho’s HIV prevention strategy. By combining innovative biomedical interventions with community-based awareness and risk reduction measures, the country is enhancing its capacity to protect vulnerable populations. This initiative demonstrates a sustained commitment to improving the well-being of Basotho through strategic partnerships and evidence-based health interventions. Continued monitoring, education, and responsible use will be essential to maximize the impact of Lenacapavir and reduce new HIV infections. The program reflects Lesotho’s proactive approach to public health and its determination to adopt innovative solutions to persistent challenges.
