Lesotho Hosts First Ever CAF SAFE Stadium Initiative Workshop to Strengthen Football Safety

The Lesotho Football Association, in collaboration with the Confederation of African Football, has launched its first CAF SAFE Stadium Initiative Workshop in the country. This three-day program brings together safety and security personnel from local clubs, the Lesotho Football Association, and the Premier League Management Committee to learn about comprehensive safety protocols. The workshop focuses on measures that must be implemented before, during, and after football matches to ensure the well-being of players, officials, and spectators. By introducing this initiative, Lesotho aligns with CAF’s broader objectives of standardizing stadium safety across Africa. The opening ceremony was officiated by LeFA President Mr. Lijane Nthunya, who emphasized the importance of creating secure environments for football events.
The CAF SAFE Stadium Initiative is designed to prevent stadium-related accidents and tragedies by establishing clear, actionable safety standards for all football events. Participants in the workshop receive hands-on guidance on crowd management, emergency response procedures, and risk assessment tailored to both domestic league matches and continental competitions. The initiative aims to make stadiums safer by equipping personnel with the knowledge to handle emergencies, enforce regulations, and maintain order during high-pressure events. By adhering to these guidelines, clubs and associations can reduce risks while fostering a positive matchday experience for fans. The workshop also provides a platform for knowledge sharing between local personnel and experienced CAF instructors.
Instruction during the workshop is led by Xolile Nokuthula Vilakati from CAF Headquarters in Egypt, along with Joshua Andries Hoebeb from Namibia. Both instructors bring extensive expertise in football safety and security management, ensuring that participants gain practical skills applicable in real match settings. Sessions include scenario-based training, discussions on international best practices, and techniques for implementing security measures efficiently. Emphasis is placed on proactive planning, coordination with local authorities, and effective communication during emergencies. Attendees leave the workshop equipped not only with knowledge of CAF standards but also with strategies to adapt these measures to the unique challenges of Lesotho’s football environment.
The initiative represents a significant milestone in Lesotho’s commitment to improving football safety. By participating in CAF’s program, local officials demonstrate a dedication to protecting spectators, players, and staff while enhancing the country’s reputation for hosting safe football events. Standardized safety procedures also contribute to the growth of football by making matches more appealing to fans and sponsors. Implementing these measures consistently across stadiums helps reduce incidents that can harm individuals or damage the sport’s credibility. The workshop also encourages collaboration among clubs, league officials, and CAF representatives, creating a network of trained personnel committed to stadium safety.
The first CAF SAFE Stadium Initiative Workshop in Lesotho sets a precedent for sustainable safety practices in football across the country. By providing practical training, expert instruction, and a framework for implementation, the program ensures that domestic and international matches are hosted in secure environments. Lesotho’s active engagement in this initiative demonstrates the country’s willingness to align with continental standards and prioritize the welfare of all football stakeholders. As participants return to their respective clubs and leagues, they carry the expertise to apply safety measures effectively, contributing to a long-term culture of secure and well-managed football events. This initiative reinforces the importance of structured safety protocols as an integral part of developing professional and sustainable football in Lesotho.
