Lesotho Engages with UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Geneva

The Kingdom of Lesotho participated in a two-day review of its Initial Report under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities during the 34th Session of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, held in Geneva from 9–27 March 2026. This engagement provided a platform for Lesotho to present its achievements, challenges, and ongoing initiatives in promoting disability rights. The review allowed the Kingdom to demonstrate its commitment to ensuring equality, accessibility, and inclusion for persons with disabilities. It also highlighted the importance of aligning national legislation and policy frameworks with international standards, ensuring that the rights of all citizens are protected. The session offered opportunities for dialogue with Committee experts, providing feedback and guidance on strengthening the implementation of disability rights across the country.
The delegation of Lesotho was led by the Honourable Richard Ramoeletsi, Minister of Law and Justice, who delivered both the Opening and Closing Statements on behalf of the Government. Minister Ramoeletsi emphasized Lesotho’s progress in enacting laws and policies that support the rights of persons with disabilities, while acknowledging areas that require further development. During the discussions, Committee experts engaged with the delegation on strategies to enhance social inclusion, accessibility of public spaces, and equal opportunities in education and employment. The dialogue also addressed the need for capacity-building initiatives and community-based programs that empower persons with disabilities. Through these discussions, Lesotho reaffirmed its commitment to adopting measures that guarantee the dignity and full participation of all citizens, irrespective of disability.
The engagement in Geneva allowed Lesotho to present specific initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities. These included efforts to integrate accessibility standards in public infrastructure, promote inclusive education, and expand social protection schemes. The delegation highlighted collaborative programs with civil society organizations, aimed at raising awareness and advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities at the community level. Committee experts provided recommendations on enhancing monitoring mechanisms and ensuring that national policies translate into tangible outcomes for beneficiaries.
