UNDP and World Bank Assess Agricultural Progress at Likhothola Fruit Farm

The United Nations Development Programme, in partnership with the World Bank, conducted a joint visit to Likhothola Fruit Farm in Mahobong, Leribe, to evaluate the impact of ongoing agricultural investments. The delegation was led by UNDP Resident Representative, Dr. Jacqueline Olweya, and World Bank Representative, Ms. Dinara Djoldosheva. The visit provided an opportunity to assess progress in improving farm productivity, farmer capacity, and operational efficiency. Officials engaged directly with farm managers and trainees to understand how investment support translates into practical outcomes. The assessment reinforced the importance of structured partnerships in advancing Lesotho’s agricultural and rural development objectives.

At the heart of the initiative is the Lesotho Horticultural Incubation and Training Centre, co-funded by UNDP to strengthen the skills and capacity of fruit and vegetable farmers. The Centre provides structured training programs that equip farmers with technical knowledge, modern farming practices, and operational management skills. UNDP support extends to the provision of fruit sorting and packing equipment, essential agricultural inputs, and IT tools to improve workflow and market readiness. These resources enable farmers to deliver higher quality produce and access broader domestic and regional markets. The initiative aligns with national goals of increasing productivity, promoting value addition, and ensuring sustainable agriculture practices.

During the visit, the delegation toured orchards, classrooms, and storage facilities to observe the farm’s integrated production and training model. Likhothola Farm produces an estimated 600 tons of apples per harvest, contributing substantially to local agricultural output and supporting rural livelihoods. The model combines practical training with operational management, allowing farmers to apply knowledge directly while improving farm efficiency. Officials highlighted the replicable nature of this approach for other agricultural enterprises across Lesotho. The visit underscored the potential for scaling successful practices to strengthen food security, create jobs, and boost economic resilience.

The joint engagement further demonstrated the benefits of strategic partnerships in advancing sustainable development. Collaboration between UNDP and the World Bank provides both technical expertise and financial support, ensuring projects achieve measurable outcomes. Coordinated efforts enhance resource utilisation, capacity building, and long-term sustainability. The visit reaffirmed a shared commitment to supporting Lesotho’s agricultural transformation agenda, focusing on innovation, market access, and rural development.

By combining investment with training and infrastructure support, the partnership is strengthening Lesotho’s agricultural sector while promoting inclusive economic growth. Likhothola Fruit Farm serves as a model for integrated agricultural development, demonstrating how coordinated interventions can enhance productivity and resilience. The collaboration between UNDP and the World Bank continues to advance national priorities, ensuring that agricultural investments translate into tangible benefits for communities, farmers, and the broader economy.
