Lesotho Submits Candidature for African Union Peace and Security Council 2026–2028

The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho has officially submitted its candidature for membership of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term. This move reinforces Lesotho’s commitment to promoting peace, security, constitutional order, and collective stability across the African continent. The election for new members will take place on the margins of the Executive Council in Addis Ababa, providing an opportunity for member states to evaluate Lesotho’s readiness and contributions to continental peace initiatives. Lesotho aims to bring a principled and consistent approach to conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding, reflecting its longstanding dedication to stability in Africa.
Hon. Lejone Mpotjoane, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, emphasized Lesotho’s readiness to serve the continent and its principled stance on peace and security matters. He highlighted the country’s experience in conflict resolution, regional diplomacy, and adherence to rule-based processes as key factors in its candidature. Lesotho’s bid aligns with its broader foreign policy objectives of supporting peacekeeping operations, strengthening regional collaboration, and upholding the principles of the African Peace and Security Architecture. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to engage with other AU member states to consolidate support and showcase Lesotho’s capacity to contribute effectively to the PSC.
The candidature also reflects Lesotho’s commitment to Agenda 2063 and the African Union’s vision of a conflict-free continent. By seeking membership in the PSC, Lesotho aims to reinforce African ownership of peace processes and promote rule-based decision-making in conflict prevention and resolution. The government believes that active participation in the PSC will allow it to influence continental policies, provide practical solutions to security challenges, and strengthen partnerships with other AU member states. Lesotho’s engagement underscores the country’s determination to play a constructive role in shaping a stable, secure, and peaceful Africa.
If elected, Lesotho will leverage its membership to support initiatives that address the root causes of conflict, including governance deficits, social inequality, and economic instability. The country’s approach emphasizes collaboration with regional and international partners while maintaining African-led strategies for mediation and peacebuilding. Lesotho’s participation in the PSC will not only enhance its diplomatic profile but also contribute to advancing sustainable peace and security across the continent. The government continues to reaffirm its dedication to proactive diplomacy, constructive engagement, and the promotion of stability for all African nations.
