Katse Dam Emerges as Key Tourism Priority Ahead of Lesotho’s 2025/26 Budget

As Lesotho prepares for the presentation of the 2025/26 Budget by Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, the development of Katse Dam as a premier tourism destination has gained significant attention. The Katse community, represented by the Chairperson of Katse Action Aid, Mr. Selikane Rakuoane, emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure, accommodation, and recreational services to unlock the dam’s full tourism potential. Mr. Rakuoane highlighted that despite Katse Dam being one of the country’s most remarkable engineering achievements, it remains underutilized as a tourism asset. The upcoming Katse Dam Tourism Festival, scheduled for the end of the month, aims to showcase the area’s natural beauty and diverse tourism offerings both locally and internationally.

The Katse Dam Tourism Festival was established to increase visibility of the site and promote its tourism capabilities. Mr. Rakuoane explained that the event serves as a platform to market the dam as a key attraction that can contribute meaningfully to the local and national economy. The festival also creates opportunities for local entrepreneurs in hospitality, crafts, and transport services, empowering surrounding communities. By promoting tourism development, the initiative seeks to generate revenue, create employment opportunities for youth, and stimulate broader economic growth in the region.

Community leaders are hopeful that the 2025/26 Budget will allocate resources to support the transformation of Katse Dam into a vibrant tourism hub. Proper investment and government backing are seen as essential for improving visitor infrastructure, expanding accommodation options, and developing recreational services around the dam. The festival not only highlights the dam’s scenic and cultural value but also aims to establish it as an internationally recognized destination. Stakeholders stress that tourism development at Katse aligns with national priorities for economic diversification and sustainable community empowerment. As anticipation builds, the Katse community looks forward to seeing government support translate into actionable development plans for the dam.
