Lesotho Launches Rural Electrification Project in Maboella, Leribe District

The Ministry of Energy in Lesotho has officially launched a major rural electrification project in Maboella, Peka, located in the Leribe district. The project, inaugurated by Minister of Energy Hon. Mohlomi Moleko, is set to provide electricity to 560 households at an estimated cost of M17.1 million. The initiative aims to enhance the living standards of rural communities while supporting broader economic growth. The project is scheduled for completion by 21 December 2026, marking a significant milestone in the Ministry’s efforts to expand access to reliable electricity across the country. Minister Moleko emphasized that extending electricity to rural areas is a priority to reduce disparities and promote sustainable development.
The electrification initiative will directly benefit four villages, including Mpapa, Pobeng, Mashapha, and Ha Seetsa. Access to electricity is expected to improve education by enabling students to study in the evenings and providing schools with the ability to use modern teaching tools. Small businesses in the region are anticipated to gain new opportunities for growth through extended operating hours and improved productivity. The project will also enhance safety within these communities, reducing risks associated with inadequate lighting and limited access to essential services. Minister Moleko highlighted that the electrification program forms part of a broader strategy to drive socio-economic progress in rural Lesotho.
Officials and local leaders attended the handover ceremony, demonstrating strong collaboration between government institutions and communities. Among the attendees were Kolonyama Representative Lempe Mahlathene, Branch Secretary Tankiso Phapano, and Leribe District Administrator Letsema Khoalanyane. Their presence reflected the importance of community engagement in ensuring the success and sustainability of the project. The involvement of local leaders is expected to facilitate smoother implementation, monitoring, and maintenance once the electrification is operational. Community members have expressed optimism about the project, noting that access to electricity will transform daily life, from household convenience to business operations.
This electrification project represents a strategic investment in the future of rural communities in Lesotho. By providing reliable electricity, the initiative will create an enabling environment for education, entrepreneurship, and overall well-being. The project also aligns with national goals to modernize infrastructure and reduce energy inequality between urban and rural areas. As the Ministry of Energy continues to expand access to electricity, communities in Leribe and beyond can expect improved quality of life and new opportunities for development. The Maboella project demonstrates Lesotho’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable rural transformation.
