South Africa to Repatriate Fallen Freedom Fighters from Maseru Massacre

The Republic of South Africa has announced plans to repatriate the remains of freedom fighters who died during the Maseru massacre, as part of its five-year initiative to return fallen heroes from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. The repatriation is expected to begin in the first week of March 2026.

Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture of South Africa, Ms. Peace Mabe, revealed the plans during her four-day working visit to Lesotho. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, she confirmed that a joint task team comprising officials from Lesotho and South Africa has already been established.

Ms. Mabe explained that a technical team will visit the Maseru sites in March to conduct grave mapping and carry out DNA testing and sampling where necessary. She noted that South Africa has already repatriated fallen freedom fighters from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Uganda, and aims to extend the initiative to other SADC member states.

On behalf of the Government of Lesotho, Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo, welcomed the initiative, calling it a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. He highlighted the shared history, culture, and traditions forged during the liberation struggle, emphasizing the importance of honouring those who sacrificed their lives.

Mr. Maqelepo described the Maseru massacre as a painful chapter in Lesotho and South Africa’s shared history, but also a testament to resilience and dedication. He stressed that the repatriation process represents a profound moral and symbolic act, providing dignity, healing, and closure for the families affected.

The repatriation of the fallen freedom fighters from the Maseru massacre is expected to restore recognition and honour to the individuals who lost their lives in the fight for freedom, reaffirming the historical bond between Lesotho and South Africa.
