Bokamoso Project Empowers 5,700 Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Berea

The Bokamoso Project, part of the Mothers to Mothers initiative, is making a significant impact in Berea by supporting 5,700 orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) and their families. The project focuses on ensuring children remain on HIV treatment, gain access to early testing, and receive improved nutrition.
Berea district coordinator for Mothers to Mothers, Ms Ntombizonke Letšela, explained that the project targets children living with HIV and their families, children living with people with HIV, pregnant and breastfeeding adolescents, and HIV-exposed infants. “We work with the Department of Social Development to improve nutrition and teach families to grow their own food. We also give care packages to the most vulnerable households,” she said.
The project employs 34 staff members across eight Berea councils, including 30 case management workers, two community social workers, and two facility-based social workers. Clinic-based social workers and case management staff conduct home visits to ensure children and parents take their medication and that infants are tested early.
Bokamoso operates in eight councils, mainly Maseru Urban, Kanana, Senekane, Phuthiatsana, Teya-Teyaneng, Motanasela, Mapoteng, and Koeneng. The initiative began in October 2024 and continues to provide vital support to families, improve health outcomes, and strengthen community resilience.
