30th Anniversary of King Moshoeshoe II Remembered at Thaba-Bosiu

The 30th anniversary of the passing of His Majesty King Moshoeshoe II was observed on Thursday at Thaba-Bosiu, with Basotho from across the country gathering to honour the leader whose vision and wisdom laid the foundation of Lesotho. His legacy in uniting the nation, protecting its people, and shaping Basotho identity continues to be celebrated.
Lesotho Defence Force Deputy Commander, Major General Matela Matobakele, described Thaba-Bosiu as one of the most exceptional and vital mountains in Lesotho and Africa. He highlighted its central role in the survival and identity of the Basotho nation. Major General Matobakele noted that the mountain faces north, reflecting the migration of Basotho ancestors from the north, and emphasized that Lesotho’s geography has protected it from destructive east-to-west winds.
He also explained that Thaba-Bosiu has five passages and was strategically used by King Moshoeshoe I and his patriots to defend the nation during wars. King Moshoeshoe I served as the overall commander, leading his people from Thaba-Bosiu to protect Basotho and their land.
The Christian Council of Lesotho led the commemoration, reading from Philippians 4:4: “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, Rejoice!” The council encouraged Basotho to live in peace and follow the example of King Moshoeshoe II, describing him as a man of peace.
The ceremony was officially opened by the Principal Chief of Matsieng, Prince Seeiso Bereng Seeiso, who began with a prayer. He explained that the gathering was held to honour and remember King Moshoeshoe II. Prince Seeiso led a procession to the grave of King Moshoeshoe I and later to King Moshoeshoe II’s grave to offer prayers.
King Moshoeshoe II passed away at the age of 57 in a road accident on January 15, 1996, when his car plunged off a mountain road during the early hours. The anniversary at Thaba-Bosiu served as a reminder of his enduring influence and the importance of unity, peace, and leadership in Lesotho.
