Lerotholi Polytechnic (LP) hosted a historic inauguration as Prince Lerotholi Mohato Seeiso was sworn in as the institution’s first Chancellor. Many students, staff, and dignitaries attended the event to witness the ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s history.
Prince Lerotholi, aged 18, is the heir apparent to the throne of the Kingdom of Lesotho and the third child and only son of King Letsie III and Queen ‘Masenate Seeiso. His role as Chancellor comes at a time when he carries the traditional expectations of his nation and represents the continuity of the royal lineage. His birth ensured stability in the line of succession and safeguarded the royal family’s legacy.
The prince’s name honors Lerotholi, the Paramount Chief of the Basotho from 1891 to 1905, symbolizing a historical connection to his ancestors and reinforcing his ties to Lesotho’s heritage. Prince Lerotholi has two older sisters, Princess Senate and Princess ‘M’aSeeiso, who form part of the immediate royal family.
Students at LP have expressed optimism about the prince’s appointment. Taelo Ts’enki, a Tourism Management student, said, “We are hopeful that this is the beginning of good things to come and the end of endless strikes in our institution. We believe he brings new and positive energy to problems facing us.”
Lerotholi Polytechnic traces its roots to 1905, following the vision of Paramount Chief Lerotholi Letsie in 1894 to establish a technical school in Lesotho. Fundraising for the institution began in 1898, and the polytechnic has since evolved into a key center for technical education and skills development in the country.
The appointment of Prince Lerotholi as Chancellor signifies a new era for Lerotholi Polytechnic, blending historical legacy with youth leadership, and offering hope for stability, innovation, and progress within the institution.
