Lesotho and United States Sign $364 Million Health Cooperation Agreement

The Government of Lesotho and the United States have solidified a major health partnership through the signing of a five-year Bilateral Health Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement, signed by Lesotho’s Minister of Finance, Dr Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane, and U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, His Excellency Thomas Hines, outlines a combined investment of $364 million (approximately M6.21 billion) to support Lesotho’s long-term health priorities.
The memorandum sets a clear agenda to save lives, strengthen the national health system, and build resilience while ensuring national ownership of health delivery. It recognizes Lesotho’s progress in combating HIV/AIDS, celebrating the country’s achievement of surpassing the 95-95-95 global targets with a remarkable 97-97-99 performance.
Under the agreement, the United States plans to provide up to USD 232 million over the next five years, subject to Congressional approval. These funds will support HIV/AIDS programs, enhance the health workforce, improve data systems, and strengthen disease surveillance. The Government of Lesotho will contribute USD 132 million to reinforce the integrated health system and maintain the gains already achieved.
Minister of Health, Honourable Selibe Mochoboroane, witnessed the signing and highlighted the introduction of Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention medication. He stated that this innovation could significantly reduce new infections within the next five years.
Minister of Finance, Dr Matlanyane, welcomed the investment, emphasizing the importance of the partnership in addressing ongoing health challenges faced by the Basotho. She expressed gratitude for the United States’ continued support, noting that the collaboration would play a critical role in sustaining health improvements nationwide.
This strategic partnership signals a long-term commitment to strengthening Lesotho’s health system, improving public health outcomes, and sustaining progress against HIV/AIDS and other critical health challenges.
