Lesotho Electricity Company Hosts 59th Southern African Power Pool Executive Committee Meeting in Maseru

The Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) has proudly hosted the 59th Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) Executive Committee Meeting in Maseru, bringing together regional leaders, international partners, and energy experts to discuss the future of power cooperation and sustainability in Southern Africa.
The high-level gathering marked a milestone for Lesotho and the SAPP community, reinforcing the Mountain Kingdom’s role in advancing regional energy integration. The meeting provided a platform for member states to review progress, share insights, and align strategies aimed at improving grid reliability, increasing energy access, and accelerating the transition to renewable power.
In his welcoming remarks, LEC Managing Director, Mr. Tšeliso ‘Mokela, extended warm greetings to His Majesty King Letsie III, the Right Honourable Prime Minister, the Minister of Energy, and all distinguished delegates. He highlighted the importance of regional solidarity in achieving shared energy goals and emphasized that collaboration within SAPP is key to creating a sustainable and interconnected power network across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mr. ‘Mokela commended the continued efforts of SAPP member utilities in promoting energy security and advancing cross-border electricity trade. He noted that Lesotho’s participation in such initiatives reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing its energy sector and contributing to regional stability through power generation and transmission development.
The Southern African Power Pool, established in 1995 under the SADC framework, coordinates the planning and operation of electric power systems among member countries to ensure reliable supply and efficient electricity trading. The 59th Executive Committee Meeting focused on progress toward regional power market integration, investment in renewable projects, and strengthening transmission infrastructure to support sustainable growth.
Delegates discussed the need for innovative financing, policy alignment, and technology adoption to meet the growing energy demands of the region. Special attention was given to improving interconnectivity between national grids, fostering green energy solutions, and enhancing the capacity of utilities to manage regional trade.
The event also served as a platform for building partnerships between governments, development agencies, and private sector investors. Through collaboration, SAPP aims to create a stable and efficient power pool that supports economic growth, industrial development, and environmental sustainability.
By hosting the meeting, Lesotho demonstrated its readiness to play a more active role in shaping Southern Africa’s energy future. The discussions held in Maseru are expected to strengthen cooperation among member countries and pave the way for a more integrated and resilient regional electricity network.
