Lesotho Reaffirms Commitment to Multilateralism at NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Conference

At the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), held from 15–16 October 2025 in Kampala, Uganda, His Excellency Matete ‘Nena, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, delivered a statement on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane.

H.E. ‘Nena emphasized Lesotho’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, sustainable development, and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and NAM. The statement highlighted the country’s priorities in addressing global challenges and promoting equitable international systems.

Key points from Lesotho’s message included the urgent need to strengthen multilateral diplomacy to confront climate change, youth unemployment, conflicts, and unequal trade practices. H.E. ‘Nena called for renewed adherence to the Bandung Principles, emphasizing respect for sovereignty, human rights, and peaceful conflict resolution.

Lesotho expressed strong support for UN reforms, particularly in ensuring fair African representation in both permanent and non-permanent categories of the Security Council. The statement welcomed the recent signing of the peace agreement in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and urged all contributing countries to ensure its unconditional implementation. H.E. ‘Nena also extended support to the people of Western Sahara in their pursuit of inalienable rights to self-determination.

Further, Lesotho advocated for reform of international financial institutions to protect developing countries from debt traps and to promote genuine development. The country called for technology transfer and development partnerships with the global north, emphasizing the need to move beyond aid dependency.

H.E. ‘Nena underscored the vision of empowering youth to lead in sectors such as innovation, ICT, and agriculture through fair global systems and accountable international institutions.

In conclusion, H.E. Matete ‘Nena stated: “If the principles of the UN Charter and NAM are upheld by all, global peace and security can be safeguarded, and sustainable development can be a reality for all nations.”

Lesotho’s participation reaffirmed its role as a committed member of NAM, advocating for fair international practices, sustainable development, and youth empowerment across the African continent and beyond.
