Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase II Progress Slower Than Planned

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) Phase II, originally anticipated to reach 57 percent completion by this time, currently stands at 48 percent, indicating a delay of 10 percent. This update was provided by Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) Chief Executive, Mr. Tente Tente, during a Media Press Club event in Maseru aimed at strengthening relations between LHDA and the press.

Mr. Tente reported that the construction of the dam, a central component of Phase II, was expected to be 50 percent complete but is currently at 37 percent. Despite this lag, the project has generated substantial employment, with 16,400 skilled and unskilled workers engaged, of whom 14,954 are Basotho.

He emphasized that while challenges exist, the project has delivered notable achievements. Livelihoods have been transformed, and community relocations have been managed with care. Under Phase II, 296 households are planned for resettlement, with 21 households already successfully relocated.

The LHDA remains committed to advancing Phase II while addressing delays, focusing on both infrastructure development and the welfare of affected communities. The project continues to play a critical role in Lesotho’s economic development and in ensuring water supply for both domestic use and hydropower generation.
