SARCOF-31 Kicks Off in Lusaka to Strengthen Regional Climate Action

The 31st Southern Africa Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-31) is taking place from September 8 to 11 in Lusaka, Zambia. The forum aims to enhance regional collaboration on disaster preparedness and improve management of weather and climate-related risks across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Delegates from all SADC Member States, including a team from Lesotho, are attending the forum. In his opening remarks, Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary for Zambia’s Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, highlighted the critical role of climate services in protecting lives, livelihoods, and supporting sustainable development.
Under the theme “At the Frontline of Climate Action Towards Improved Climate Services in the SADC Region,” SARCOF-31 focuses on addressing the growing impacts of climate change on farmers, urban populations, businesses, and households. Participants will discuss strategies to strengthen early warning systems, improve forecasting, and enhance regional coordination in responding to extreme weather events.
The forum provides a platform for sharing knowledge, best practices, and scientific data among SADC Member States. It also seeks to promote climate-smart planning in agriculture, urban development, and disaster management, ensuring communities are better prepared for changing climate patterns.
SARCOF-31 is expected to produce recommendations that will guide national and regional policies on climate adaptation, risk reduction, and sustainable development, reinforcing the SADC region’s commitment to climate resilience.
